Nestled along the San Francisco Bay south of Oakland and Alameda, San Leandro boasts miles of water access along the bay trail and a 450-berth Marina. It also sports two golf courses and a large community library with three branches.

San Leandro residents enjoy a wide range of housing options, including quiet tree-lined neighborhoods with bungalows built in the 30’s and 40’s, ranch homes built in the 50’s and newer housing along the marina. Because many of its original residents have stayed on, San Leandro has a large elderly population, but a diverse population of young families has recently begun moving into the city. Citizens are quite active in city, neighborhood and homeowners associations. San Leandro has celebrated its annual Cherry Festival in early June since 1909, when cherry trees were abundant in the area. Live music, food, arts and a cherry pie bake-off entertain participants along West Estudillo in the downtown area.

San Leandro’s traditional manufacturing base has diminished in recent years and the city now has moved more toward services and warehousing industries. Companies including Coca Cola, Kraft/General Foods, Ghirardelli Chocolate, Otis Spunkmeyer, and Winterland Productions are located in San Leandro, which is also conveniently located between the South Bay and Silicon Valley and San Francisco/Oakland job markets. Its close proximity to the Oakland Airport and two BART stations (San Leandro and Bay Fair) give San Leandro residents easy access to the Bay Area and beyond.
