Alameda's West End is a neighborhood full of changes. Dominated for more than sixty years by the Naval Air Station on Alameda Point (which closed in 1997), the West End is now in the midst of a major revitalization. Future projects include Alameda Landing, a mix-used community on the estuary across from Jack London Square and the redevelopment of Alameda Point. With easy access to the Webster Street tube, the West End is just minutes away from Oakland’s Chinatown and a short drive from San Francisco and Berkeley. Architectural styles range from stately Victorians, once home to Navy commanders and generals, to quaint post-war bungalows to apartments and the newly-built homes of Bay Port. Community events include a farmer’s market, concerts at Crab Cove State Park, First Fridays Gallery opens and a Halloween festival. Webster Street offers residents an array of restaurants and shops, including The New Zealander, located in the historic Croll’s building (a California Historical Landmark). A family-friendly neighborhood with eight schools including The College of Alameda, the west end is the fastest growing neighborhood in Alameda and a great place for first time home buyers.
